Data Stories from Stage 3 of BC’s Reopening

Step 3 of British Columbia’s reopening began July 1, 2021 kicking off a long weekend of spending on local travel throughout the province.


• Across the province there was a slight decrease in shopping compared to the week before as British Columbians took time off to spend Canada Day weekend with family and friends as the remaining restrictions on indoor and outdoor social gatherings lifted.

• Hotels saw a 50% increase week-over-week as local travel picked up for the long weekend, including increases in:

Abbotsford: 16% increase 
Kamloops: 65% increase
Kelowna: 22% increase
Nanaimo: 54% increase
Prince George: 68% increase
Surrey: 23% increase
Vancouver: 68% increase
Victoria: 49% increase

• Bars throughout the province saw a 24% increase week-over-week, with a high of 49% in Kelowna just beating out Vancouver at 48% and Victoria in third at 32%.

• Kelowna also saw the highest increase in restaurants at 29%.

• British Columbians were back on the green again with a 22% increase at public golf courses week-over-week; Surrey had the highest increase at 42% followed by Nanaimo (30%) and Victoria (22%).

• There was also a 55% increase at tourist attractions and exhibits which includes zoos, whale watching tours, lake cruises, and kayak rentals.

About the data: British Columbia Step 3 Reopening data is based on the transaction volumes for the weekend of July 1-4, 2021 as compared to the week prior of June 24-27, 2021. Moneris spending reports measure spending in Canada across a range of categories by analyzing credit and debit card transaction data. The figures and percentages cited are derived from aggregated transaction volumes being processed by Moneris in the applicable categories.
